Who is Bashorun Gaa?
Bashorun Gaha (or Gaa) was a notable nobleman and leader of the military in the old Oyo Empire during the 18th century. During the period from 1650 to 1750, the Oyo Empire was at the pinnacle of its greatness, peace, prosperity, and wealth. The empire had expanded significantly, covering the River Niger in the north, parts of Tapa and Bariba kingdoms in the east of the lower Niger, the seacoast to the south, and the west including Popos and Dahomey. Thousands of provincial officials (called Ajeles) were appointed to administer all the conquered kingdoms and report to the Alaafin, who basked in his majesty and power.
In 1754, Gaha was named the Bashorun of Oyo. He was a descendant of the famous Bashorun Yau Yamba and was well-loved by his people due to his many war victories and the protection he provided against the cruel and despotic rulership of the kings. Renowned for his potent medicinal powers and charms, Gaha coveted all the powers and responsibilities of the Oyo state for himself; all the tributes were paid to him, and he appointed his kindred as Ajeles to administer the provinces.
He held the post during the reigns of five consecutive imperial Alaafins and was instrumental in the military conquests of their time. Known for his juju prowess, he deposed or was responsible for the deaths of four of these Alaafins before being subdued by Alaafin Abiodun (who ruled circa 1774–1789) through trickery and betrayal by his generals.
