WE BOTH DIED AT THE END
CHAPTER 19 (HALF PAIN)
I kept looking at Kate.
“What’s wrong? Why are you looking at me that way?”
I shook my head and then she picked her phone and began to play with it but I couldn’t take off my eyes from her.
What I was told via the phone was weakening. It paralyzed my whole body that I couldn’t move and Kate wasn’t even aware of the fact that I was still looking at her.
I’d seen this in movies before and if I don’t play smart I may be killed at the worst. I went over to her on the bed and was trying to play with her but in between times what I was told kept flashing back in my memory.
Should I ask her? Should I confront her? Should I show her that I know? Wait a minute! What if the caller was wrong? What if it is one of Suzan’s lies just to divide I and Kate?
My mind was filled with questions that I couldn’t answer and then I decided to pretend not to know anything.
Suddenly, Kate stopped playing with her phone. It was as if something dawned on her.

“Darling we have to pray for what is to happen tomorrow o” My mother said to my father after discussing the matter with him.
Generally, my dad was always calm and easy going and also a great thinker and also loves prayers a lot.
“You are right dear! We have to because somehow I have the feelings that she is innocent. Remember how she takes pride in accepting responsibilities be it whether she is guilty or not? I still use that as righteousness for her and I believe that she is not guilty in this”
“You are right”
“Now, let’s pray”
They both knelt down and began to pray for me for a very long time that they didn’t know when tears began to flow down from their eyes and also they couldn’t even tell the time at that moment.

“Kate, please tell me about you” I smiled
“About me?”
“Yes, about you. I just want to know more about you because I felt it is unwise to not know about my friend”
“Well, there isn’t much about me. I’m just me as you know”
“Are you kidding me?”
“What?”
“What is what? And what do you mean by ‘I’m just me as you know’? What was that?”
“Well, I will tell you about me very soon (I looked deeply into her as she speaks) you will be amazed but then change is constant don’t forget that”
“What do you mean by change is constant?”
“Are you really asking? Are you a child? You don’t know what ‘change is constant means’?”
“I know but I want to understand it from your own contest”
“Never mind. I just meant I may change my mind regarding telling you about myself”
I looked at her again and I was beginning to feel pain in my heart but I knew I must endure it if I must follow it till the end of the matter.
I couldn’t sleep that night at all. At first, I was scared that anything may happen to me but later it was all about how a heavy thought on my mind.
HOW DID END UP IN THIS STUPID SITUATION?
That thought lay heavily on my mind till I slept off.

A loud blast of ringtone woke me up from sleep. At first, I thought it was Kate’s phone but oh no it was mine! I sluggishly picked it.
“Hello my daughter, we are on our way already”
“Ok Mom. Just let me know when you are in the school, so that I can pick you up”
“Alright”
I stood up, stretched and then prayed before I noticed that Kate wasn’t around.
“Where could she be now?” I thought out loud
I went and brushed before taking my bath and then took break fast while waiting for my parents.
I took my books and read a bunch of them but Kate was still not back from wherever she went to and then my doubt began to arise again very strongly.
“God, whatever it may be, please show me mercy and see me through this matter and I promise never to drop my guard against useless friendships ever again” I prayed aloud.
My phone later rang and it was my mother. I stood up and then picked the call while going out to bring them home.
“Where exactly are you standing?” I asked
“Come towards that big tree at the middle of the school”
I hurriedly went and then I saw them standing. I met them and then both of them hugged me so tight while passers-by were busy looking and some were making faces but who cares!
I took them home, served them tea and bread and then I told them the whole story from the beginning on how I met Suzan to the end.
They both drew a heavy breath.
“Let’s pray” said my father
The three of us knelt down before God and then we began to pray so hard. I knew I was innocent and so I prayed with all sincerity because I couldn’t afford to allow some funny persons to strip me off my chance to finish my schooling.
We finished praying and it was TIME but Kate was still absent. While we were on our way to the Senate building where the meeting would take place, I called Kate but she was not picking her calls. I tried her line like ten times but same result so I left it. After all, it’s my fight not hers.
We entered and it was as is they were waiting for us already. We all sat but I noticed that Suzan still came with that old man and I was very sure that he wasn’t her biological parent.
After the proceedings, Suzan was asked about her parents.
“Sir, my parents aren’t in the country currently and so they begged Baba here to represent them”
I knew she was lying. I looked at her but then she made some mocking gestures but I was calm.
“Alright! Miss Precious, I guess they are your parents?”
“Yes Sir!”
The previous happenings in the first meeting was briefed to my parents and I could see that they were calm.
“Miss Precious where is your witness Miss Kate?”
“Sir, I don’t know. She went out this morning before I woke up and she isn’t picking her calls”
“Alright!”
My eyes coincidentally met that of Suzan and I could see some corny smile from her face.
“Mr and Mrs Jackson, please we have a video for you to watch and then tell us what you think before we tell you our conclusion”
And so, they played the video again and still yet I was so amazed as to how they were able to carry my face to replace that of Suzan’s face in the video.
One question kept coming to my mind. How is it possible that as intelligent as these people are, they still couldn’t figure out that the video is fake, that it was staged? How possible is that?
I looked patiently at my parents, especially my father. He was so concentrated and then I knew he was thinking real hard.
“You can now stop the video. We’ve seen enough” my dad said and then the video was stopped
“So, what do you think?”
My dad smiled.
“I think, this video was staged, it is fake!”
My heart was filled with joy! At last someone was able to see what I was seeing.
“How is it fake? What makes you think it is fake?” The VC asked
“Well, I know my daughter. She doesn’t go out at night and then we can all see that the video carries the same storyline but different actors. Such as the real culprit that was replaced with my daughter and then the real old man which was also replaced. Mr. VC, this isn’t evidence; this is garbage”
The old man stood up!
“That is a pure evidence and nothing was staged”
“Do you have a proof Mr. Jackson? Like can you prove that the video is fake and was only staged?” The VC asked
“Well, I’m not an expert in that field but I can sincerely tell you that my daughter is innocent”
“Of course you will say that. After all she is your daughter” the VC said as he whispered something into the ears of the woman sitting close to him.
“We’ve made our decision already and we’ve decided to expel Precious from this institution with immediate effect” the VC announced while I fell on the floor and began to cry. My mother tried to raise me up while my father was busy speaking with the VC.
I could also see the smile of mockery from Suzan and the old man. While all of these were happening, the door to the hall opened with a big bank and caught our attention.
It was KATE.
