The Crocodile (Aguiyi) in Onicha Igboeze
In the Igbo culture, each community has an animal totem that holds significant symbolism. In Onicha Igboeze, one of their revered totem animals is the crocodile. Interestingly, the people of this community do not consume crocodile meat.
According to an oral tradition passed down through generations, it is believed that if an Onicha man is mistakenly served with crocodile meat, a remarkable phenomenon occurs. When attempting to eat the meat, it inexplicably falls from the hand onto the ground, no matter how tightly grasped. After repeatedly falling two to three times, the person would abandon the attempt, recognising that it is indeed crocodile meat.
Even today, many elders in the community testify to the crocodile’s assistance during times of hardship, particularly during the war. In the past, if a boat or ship were to sink and there were crocodiles present in the water, an Onicha man could be assured of survival. These reptiles would appear, guiding and escorting an Onicha man safely to dry land.
Four years ago, I came across a post on Facebook that shared a personal account in an Igbo group called Ikenga ndi Igbo. The story recounted a young man’s experience during the late nineties while traveling to Umunogodo. Opting for a shorter route, they took a small road passing by Amakporo primary school, leading to the Nnufu River. It was around 10 am, and the atmosphere was serene. However, as they crossed a locally constructed bridge, they were met with a breathtaking sight – crocodiles populated the river. Some lurked at the river’s edge, partially exposed, while others remained in the shallower parts. It was a moment filled with mixed emotions.
Fear gripped the young man, and his courage wavered. The unexpected encounter on such a desolate road left him in shock. Thankfully, his mother was by his side, extending her hand to him. Together, they walked past the crocodiles, unharmed and unthreatened.
Based on this information, it is evident that even to this day, a significant majority of the Onicha Igboeze people refrain from consuming crocodile meat.
