Origin of Wrestling Terminology #1: Kinshasa
Shinsuke Nakamura’s finisher “Kinshasa” was originally called “Bomaye” while he wrestled for NJPW.
In the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” boxing match between Muhammad Ali & George Foreman in 1974, the crowd yelled “Ali Bomaye” in support of Ali. The phrase is of Bantu origin, and translates to “Ali, Kill Him”.
Later, NJPW Founder Antonio Inoki fought Ali in a boxing match in 1976. The Japensese crowd started chanting “Inoki Bomaye”, which was also made into a cool song.
Nakamura used the name “Bomaye” as a tribute to Inoki. When Nakamura joined WWE, they renamed it to Kinshasa. Kinshasa is the modern capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
And that famous “Rumble in the Jungle” match took place in Kinshasa.
