Nkwerre: A Hidden Gem in Igbo Heartland

Nkwerre, a historic town nestled in the densely populated Igbo heartland, is situated in the northern region of today’s Imo State, specifically within the Nkwerre Local Government Area.

According to the 2006 census, the town’s official population stood at approximately 80,000.

The people of Nkwerre take pride in their ancestral titles, namely “Nkwerre Ọkwara Eshi” and “Nkwerre ọpịa egbe.” In precolonial times, Nkwerre served as a hub for ironworks and blacksmithing. The moniker “Nkwerre ọpịa egbe” refers to the production of guns by the skilled Nkwerre craftsmen.

Beyond their expertise in smithing and gun manufacturing, the Nkwerre people were known for their prowess in trading, carving, and weaving. They engaged in long-distance trade, venturing to places such as Ikwerre, Etche, Eleme, Bonny, and Opobo in present-day Rivers State, Ọgwashi-ukwu in current Delta State, Nembe in contemporary Bayelsa, Abakaliki, and beyond.

However, with the advent of colonialism, the practice of smithing and gun production diminished in Nkwerre. Nevertheless, the Nkwerre community diversified their pursuits, with many people embracing entrepreneurship and various other life endeavors.

Today, the Nkwerre people are scattered around the globe. They have enthusiastically embraced Western education, becoming well-informed and enlightened people. At the forefront of their sociocultural development is the Nkwerre Aborigines Union, established in 1939.

In recent years, notable sons and daughters of Nkwerre have refocused their attention on their homeland, driving progress and development. It’s time to experience the delights of Nkwerre firsthand!
