Mama Ekundayo: The Kogi Woman Who Raised Over 500 Orphans and Abandoned Children
Mama Ekundayo, often referred to as the Mother Teresa of Africa, dedicated her life to caring for orphans and abandoned children. By 2007, she had adopted her 469th child, and by 2008, she had already cared for over 500 children, earning her the nickname “Olomo yeye,” meaning someone with many children.
Her name, “Ekundayo,” translates to “tears have turned to joy” in Yoruba, reflecting her life’s mission. Born Janet Ekundayo, she had five biological children but her love for children led her to adopt many more. Taking care of children came naturally to her, and she found joy in their company.
In 1969, Mama Ekundayo decided to devote her life to orphans and abandoned children. For over 50 years, she ran the Ekundayo Orphanage Home in Isanlu Makutu, Kogi State, and is celebrated as one of the most influential women in Kogi’s history.
Among her many children is the popular Nigerian singer and photographer, TY Bello. Mama Ekundayo’s legacy of love and care continues to inspire many across Nigeria and beyond.
