During the early 1980s, Funmi Adams sparked a significant sensation by uniquely adapting a Hausa folktale, “Labarin Gizo da Koki” (The Story of Gizo the Spider and his wife Koki), into modern music.
The enchantment and captivation were elevated by a video clip accompanying the audio tape, providing a rich background to the simple morality tale intended for young children.
Despite Hausa not being her first language, it was remarkable to hear someone who had successfully learned the language sing and educate so beautifully with it.
Funmi Adams gained widespread recognition and affection throughout Nigeria due to her distinctive musical style.
However, there came a time when she ceased singing, and her whereabouts became unknown, leading many to assume she had passed away.
In 2007, a fan initiated a thread on Nairaland in an attempt to discover the singer’s location, but it yielded no results.
Another fan revived the search on Nairaland in 2015, expressing eagerness to unveil the singer’s current whereabouts.
It took three years to ascertain from a family friend that Funmi Adams had migrated abroad and was leading a private life.
In October 2021, Ladan Salihu, a former director-general of Nigeria’s Federal Radio Corporation and a close friend of the singer, disclosed on Facebook that she had severed ties with friends and chosen to live a private life.
