In 1933, Pita Nwanna, a carpenter from Arọndizuọgụ, Imo State, became the first Igbo Language author to publish a novel called Omenụkọ. Despite lacking formal education, Nwanna honed his writing skills by attending Sunday School at Methodist Church, Ụzụakọli.
Omenụkọ quickly gained recognition and won numerous awards, establishing himself as a representative work of indigenous African Literature.
Through its story, Omenụkọ portrays the resilience and determination of an Igbo man as he conquers obstacles, embarks on journeys, takes risks, and achieves greatness. It also highlights the cultural inclination of the Arọ people towards travel and exploration.
