Discover the Enchanting Town of Oguta
Known as “Oguta-Ameshi” or simply “Ameshi” to its indigenous people, Oguta is a town rich in history and natural beauty. The town is divided into two parts: the old part, consisting of 27 villages, and the newer part known as “Oguta New Layout.” The Oguta New Layout strictly adheres to its original master plan, creating an organized and picturesque environment.
Situated between the majestic Oguta Lake on its eastern side and the merging Obana and Okposha Rivers on its western side, Oguta can only be accessed through the Egwe Gateway without crossing water or a bridge.
Due to its prime location and abundant oil and gas fields, Oguta holds great importance as a territory and hosts several multinational oil companies including AGIP, Shell, and Chevron. It is often referred to as Oguta Local Government Area, as it serves as its headquarters. Oguta LGA is one of the twenty-seven local government areas that comprise Imo State.
With its strategic waterways, thriving oil and gas industry, fruitful palm plantations, and bountiful agricultural products, Oguta has been a vital trade and administrative center in Nigeria since ancient times. During the Nigeria-Biafra civil war, the British and Nigerian government forces utilized Oguta’s waterways as thoroughfares to connect with neighboring towns and villages. These settlements, which include Mgbidi, Orlu, Awo-Omamma, Nkwerre, Owerri, Okigwe, Umuahia, and Aba/Ngwa, collectively form the Eastern Nigerian population in the hinterland.
One of the most captivating events in Oguta is the Omerife (Ogene), an annual New Yam Festival celebrated during the harvest season. The festivities commence from the last week of August and continue until the third week of September.
Oguta shares its borders with Anambra, Delta, and Rivers States. Positioned within the Lower Niger drainage basin, Oguta is also one of the four local governments in Imo State involved in crude oil production.
Make sure to visit Oguta, especially during the Christmas holidays, to experience its captivating charm and, most notably, to explore the breathtaking beauty of Oguta Lake.
