Biography of William Perry

A football and pop culture sensation as defensive tackle for the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears and rapper in “The Super Bowl Shuffle,” William Perry has remained a fixture in football since his retirement in the mid-1990s. Legions of fan’s affectionately referred to him as, ‘the Refrigerator’ or ‘the Fridge’ for short. When time permits, The Fridge at his ’85 Bears teammates make celebrity appearances around the country.

William Perry was born in Aiken, South Carolina on December 16, 1962 a successful run at Aiken High School, Perry played college football at Clemson University. Perry was a three-time All-American at Clemson University and part of the Tigers’ 1981 National Champion team. After finishing as the school’s all-time sacks leader (his records lasted until brother Michael Dean Perry came along and broke them), the Chicago Bears selected him with the 22nd pick in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft.

Perry gained international notoriety his rookie year in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. As a first round draft pick in the 1985 draft, expectations were high that William would develop into a premier defensive lineman. Not only did he become a pro-bowl lineman on defense, but in a surprise move, Coach Ditka called on him for help on offense. He quickly became a household celebrity.

The nation went crazy as William was called in to run the ball from short yardage during Super Bowl XX. He barreled through the line, into the end zone and into the hearts of millions. You may remember his classic and unique “Fridge” character being captured brilliantly in the Coke commercial with fellow Chicago Bear, Jim McMahon or his A-Team appearance in the 80’s hit show where he famously stated, “They’ll never catch him”, referring to his NFL playing days.

Through that almost perfect 16-1 rookie season, his 9 year NFL career, and now fifteen years in retirement, The Fridge has maintained his status as one of football’s most beloved big-men. His Super Bowl ring remains the largest ever made and his popularity continues to grow.

In the past years, The Fridge has been in several nationally televised celebrity boxing events, Kentucky Fried Chicken commercials and has made guest appearances on the Howard Stern Show and served as the super sub in the Lingerie Bowl. A star in another sports arena, Perry was inducted into the “Celebrity Wing” of the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Fridge was profiled by ABC Monday Night Football during halftime as one of the ‘Legends of the Game’. Most recently, During Super Bowl XLIV, Perry joined other members of the 1985 Chicago Bears in reviving the Super Bowl Shuffle in a Boost Mobile commercial. Most recently, he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel and joined Kimmel’s ongoing Fantasy Football League.

Perry and Walter Peyton recorded an anti-drug, pro-peace rap tune entitled “Together” which was written by four Evanston, Illinois teens. It was re-released in 1999 with part of the profits going to the Walter Payton Foundation.

The Fridge loves staying close to his fan base and regularly does guest appearances at special events and autograph signings.
