THE ÈKÌTÌ EFFECT
It is noteworthy that Ekiti State has produced famous sportsmen. Today, we’ll be discussing 4 notable sportsmen from Ekiti State.
1. Former sprinter Oluyemi Kayode, on whose memory the Ado Ekiti stadium was named in 1994, led a 4x100m relay team to a silver medal at Barcelona Olympic Games in Spain, also the first Olympic medallist from Ekiti state. Kayode led the 4×100m relay quartet that also had Olapade Adeniken, Davidson Ezinwa and Chidi Imoh. He also won a silver medal in 200 metres at the 1993 African Championships.
2. Africa’s fastest man ever, Olusoji Fasuba. He won Bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, a Gold medal at the 2008 World Indoor Games in Valencia, 2 Gold medals at the All Africa Games, a Gold medal at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad and a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
The 9.85s mark achieved by Fasuba in Doha on May 2006 makes him the fastest African runner ever.
3. Damola Osayomi, a former 100m champion and Silver medallist in the women’s 4x100m from the Beijing 2008 Olympics. she also won 4 Gold medals and 2 Bronze at the African Championships, she won 5 Gold medals at the All-Africa Games.
4. Seyi George Olofinjana is a former Super Eagles player who played as a midfielder.
