The History of Okrika Clothes
In the days of colonialism, Nigeria received a flow of second-hand clothes from abroad through the Okrika jetty/wharf in Rivers State. These garments soon became known as Okrika clothes throughout the entire country. However, it is interesting to note that the word ‘Okrika’ is actually a corruption of the name ‘Wakirike,’ meaning ‘we are all one.’
Oral history reveals that the importation of Okrika clothes dates back to the early 1950s, when the Okrika port was the sole entry point for foreign-used clothes from Europe, America, and Asia into Nigeria.
The business of importing Okrika clothes soon became highly profitable due to their affordability and durability compared to locally made garments. As a result, people from various social classes began to patronize this trade, and many individuals ventured into the importation of Okrika clothes.
Although some view Okrika clothes as attire for the lower class, they have gained widespread acceptance throughout the nation due to their quality and affordability.
Presently, one can find Okrika clothes in various parts of Nigeria, regardless of the location.
