List of Igbo towns in Delta state:
Delta State, located in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, is named after the Niger Delta, a significant portion of which lies within the state’s borders. Established on August 27, 1991, Delta State was formerly part of Bendel State. It is bordered by Edo State to the north, Anambra and Rivers States to the east, and Bayelsa State to the south, with the Niger River and the Forçados River forming natural boundaries. To the west is the Bight of Benin, which encompasses around 160 kilometers of the state’s coastline.
The state is home to various ethnic groups. The Urhobo people, residing in the delta central senatorial district, constitute a significant portion of the population. In the delta north senatorial district, the Ika and Aniocha-Oshimili-Ukwuani (Igbo) communities are prominent. The delta south senatorial district is occupied by the Isokos, Ijaws, Itsekiris, and parts of Urhobos. Other minor tribes, such as the Olukumi and Igalas, can be found in the delta north region.
Before 1963, the area now known as Delta State was part of the post-independence Western Region. It later became Mid-Western Region when the Western Region was divided. In 1967, during the attempted secession of Biafra, which sought to unite Igbo-majority areas, the Igbo population in present-day Delta State joined their Eastern Region counterparts. The Asaba Massacre, also known as the Genocide, took place during this time, leading to the deaths of more than 200,000 Igbo people in Delta State, including women and children.
Following Nigeria’s reunification at the end of the war, the Mid-Western Region was reestablished until it was renamed Bendel State in 1976. In 1991, Bendel State was divided, with the north becoming Edo State and the south becoming Delta State.
