Stylianos Lenas (July 20, 1931 – March 28, 1957)
From Chandria, in the hills north of Lemesos in Cyprus, he was an EOKA fighter and a hero of the Greek Struggle in Cyprus, against the British occupiers of the island.
His speciality was bomb making, which were used for attacks against the British colonial Army.
In February of 1957, he was seriously injured in battle and was then taken and transferred to a British controlled military hospital on Akrotiri, an area the British still control to this day.
While there, Lenas was tortured by the occupying British for 40 days, causing his death.
Following his death, the British refused to give Stylianos Lenas’ body back to his family for a proper burial and instead, he was buried at the Imprisoned Graves, in the yard of the Central Jail of Nicosia.
A true Greek hero.
