“Majesty” the Fredville Oak
This tree is called “Majesty,” and is seen by many tree lovers and experts as the most impressive oak tree in Great Britain.
It is one of the biggest Maiden Oaks in the UK, at Fredville Park at Nonington, Dover – Kent, UK.
A maiden oak, is a tree which hasn’t been pollarded (having had the top and branches cut off to encourage new growth at the top)
In the early twentieth century the tree lost an enormous limb at 3 – 4 m height at the south side of the trunk.
This created an enormous void, which shows the tree is totally hollow!
‘Majesty’ is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. It’s at least 20 metres tall, and a circumference of 12 metres – thats the equivalent of 26 primary school children holding hands in a circle!
It’s estimated to contain around 40 tons of timber.
‘Majesty’ is thought to be up to 1,000 years old, but what we do know is, it has been flourishing since at least 1554, when it was at that time recorded as ‘The Fredville Oak.’
People travelled purposefully to Fredville Park just to see the magnificent oak tree there.
