WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN KENYA 5,000 YEARS AGO?
In 2022, archaeologists discovered a cemetery that dates back to around 3000 BC at Jarigole on the eastern side of Lake Turkana, in Kenya, near the Ethiopian border.
From above, the site appears as an oval-shaped platform that is surrounded by 28 basalt pillars. It is one of several stone pillar sites in northern Kenya, that are thought to be ancient African astronomy sites.
Beneath the pillars, researchers discovered a cemetery that was well planned and a lot of labour was put into it by a very complex pastoralist society. The deceased were buried together with their personal adornments, and one individual was found with more than 100 beads - made of amazonite and other stones- near their neck and chest, indicating that they were perhaps worn as a necklace.
The site also includes distinctive pottery, that was previously dated to about 4,000 years ago.
