The ghosts of Hampton Court
Jane Seymour died from post-birth complications at Hampton Court, only a few days after delivering Henry’s longed-for son.
It is said that on the anniversary of her son’s October 1537 birth date, a sad, pale wraith often appears on the Silverstick Stairs, which once led to a room in which it is rumoured Jane gave birth to the baby prince. This apparition is said to be Jane looking for her son.
Another of Henry’s wives is said to haunt the palace; his rose without a thorn, Catherine Howard, has a much more common appearance and is more vocal than her predecessor.
It is said that when the terrified teenager was being arrested, she broke free from her guards and ran down what is now called the Haunted Gallery, screaming for the King. She never made it to Henry and was later sent to her death. It is said that her anguished ghost now repeats this unfinished journey to find the king for all eternity.
Another common phantom is the ‘Grey Lady’, Sybil Penn, rumoured to have been a wet nurse to Edward VI and a servant to Elizabeth I. She caringly nursed Elizabeth through her bout of smallpox but unfortunately fell victim to it herself. Sybil was buried nearby in Hampton Church, as befitting a loyal servant. After her tomb was disturbed during a church renovation in 1829, a ‘grey lady’ was seen walking the corridors of the State Apartments and Clock Court at the palace.
In October 2003, the palace CCTV captured the image of a ghostly figure, apparently flinging open a fire door.
Do you think Hampton Court Palace is haunted, or is it just steeped in legend and history and the active imagination of visitors?
